One reason car-free events are worthwhile is that they help people imagine a car-lite existence. e.g. Having 2 family vehicles instead of 3, or 1 instead of 2.
The other factor I think needs more awareness is how good public transit it in most large urban areas. Maybe a free transit day, or a transit awareness week would do a lot of good. I'm shocked at how many people are ride-sharing service or car reliant in areas where busses could get them from point A to B way cheaper and often faster.
